Famous? Not quite.

Hello there Internet,
I had a very exciting week. So exciting that I have to share it with whoever may read this. If you haven't read any of my previously posted blogs I am a broadcast journalism major at NSCC. We had a strike scare, that was resolved at the last minute. So of course the local media poured into our doors and wanted to know what was going on. So naturally I wanted to get involved. I ran out and asked a CBC reporter if he knew what was going on and let him know I was around to comment if he needed it. Later in the day he tracked me down and asked a few questions, which turned into something more. He made a call back to the station and asked me if I wanted to be on the 6 o'clock news as the "News maker of the day"

Wow! This was exciting, of course I said yes. So we set up and I talked to Tom Murphy, the CBC news anchor. We chatted through a mike hooked up to a cell phone. It was fun, so that night I got to sit with my family and watch myself on TV!

Next CBC radio contacted me and a classmate. One of the hosts over at CBC came over to the school and interviewed us both. The interview aired that day.

That is the story of my interesting week! So not quite famous, but I'm getting closer! Ha ha.

Until next time,
KP

Get out there! Diversity idea.

World,
Here's a way I can keep my work diverse. You can try it too!

I want to do a spotlight on different communities in HRM. There are so many different people in Metro and it isn't hard to go out and get people talking about there community. Shed some light on a place that may have a bad reputation. Even in the scariest, violent area there are still stories that surprise people and are really inspirational. Hey, maybe I could even turn it into a sound scape!

Keep an eye out guys!
Until next time,
KP

Strike Rant

Hello World,
Last blog I told you about the strike, and boy did it get intense. Teachers set the strike date October 20th. A whole week went by, and neither side budged. Monday the 19th rolled around, and we were preparing for the worst. Not only did we expect to watch our teachers circle with a picket sign, but we thought it was going to go on for a long time. But to the students, and faculty's surprise BANG strike averted, both sides came to a tentative agreement. So that is what happened, but I kind of want to rant about who was forgotten in this whole situation.

I am not impressed with how the students were treated during this whole mess. From day one I think both sides lost sight of who was going to be effected the most. I don't think either side meant to leave us out, but it happened. Since school started in September and the rumors of a strike were lingering in the school we were told nothing. But wait, the day after faculty and support staff voted over 90 % in favor of striking, we were sent an email. The email including lots of reassuring and next to no information was useless. Email after email popped into our inbox all of which said "Don't worry, this doesn't mean a strike is in the future". We the students were left with worries and doubts about or education and NO plans for the future.

As if being in the dark wasn't bad enough, the day a strike was averted we were yet again forgotten. Teachers received word through email at 10:30 that a strike had been averted. And then about 45 minutes to an hour later boom, students are finally told. Why was I surprised?

Strike or no strike, I am hurt and annoyed at the way I was treated as a student during this whole mess. I haven't even started on how students acted during this mess. Here at the Waterfront campus we did nothing to try and save our education. Student association was useless. They planned a "Peaceful Demonstration" outside province house at 7:45 the day the strike was set to start. Wait a minute, am I missing something? For one, what is a demonstration going to do now, our teachers are already out on the streets and we are sitting on our buts at home. Second, no one is at province house at that hour in that day. Who are we to be yelling at, Security? Way to go SA, 4 thumbs down in my opinion.

The main point is a strike was averted and I am happily still in school. Union members will vote tonight on the new deal. The union is recommending they accept the proposal. My point is, this was a huge mess. I think both sides failed in remembering who was the most important party and I think we as a student body failed in getting our voice out there.

Until next time,
KP

Keeping NSCC in School!

Hello internet,

Last week I filled you in on what I do at school and what it’s like. Well bad news is surrounding school now. The whispers say strike. Yes sadly our faculty feel they are underpaid and government is not willing to give them the raise they want. Of course this is happening a month into school and the only ones who will suffer the most, students. So let’s get into some details.

The NSCC faculty have been negotiating their contract for over a year now with no results. They want the same contract that public school teachers received a 2.9 % in each year of a two year contract. Teachers voted on September 22nd and over 90 percent of teachers voted in favour of the strike. Uh Oh. So off go the emails to student assuring that this does not mean there will be a strike. Classes resume as usual, and students don’t seem to be worried. Hello? Do we not realize that this is going to affect us? This means that our teachers may be walking out on the job, and we will be left paying for schooling that we will not receive.

Now getting back on track. On Friday October 2nd the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and NSCC faculty and support staff negotiators went back to the table. They left at the end of the day with no progress..Great. This is very bad news. Yet just like before out go the emails saying not to worry, that everything possible is being done to avoid a strike. That may be true, but things are not looking good at this point.

This Thursday, October 8th NSCC executives will gather to set a strike date. They will be giving 48 hours notice. This weekend is thanksgiving weekend, meaning we have a long weekend. So everyone seems to be preparing for a strike on Tuesday. And yet, the students still seem to be honky dory.

Common people! Let’s let them know what we think. I say we get together, march on down to the Nova Scotia Province house and strike this strike! Let’s stop just sitting around and waiting, how about we do something. So what happens now, we go eat some turkey and then come back to school and cross a picket line? How about they let us know what’s going on, after all this is affecting us. I am just so mind boggled that we have no information about this. Will classes be pushed back? Will we get money back in the case it goes for a long time?

There are so many questions and I feel someone really has to step up and think about the students. Also, students get it together! Let’s start to ask questions, let’s start to care!
I guess this story is on going and I will keep you posted!

Until next time,
KP
